What does it mean – Data Element Length?
Different EDI standards contain different sets of data elements related to that definite standard. Data elements dictionary provides various information about each data element including its length.
Data Element Length is the range, minimum to maximum, of the number of character positions available to represent the value of a data element. A data element may be of variable length and range from the minimum to maximum, or it may be a fixed length in which the minimum length is equal to the maximum length.
Fixed-length data type means a specific number of characters. For example, a location data element might have a fixed length of 25 characters. Variable-length data type means no fixed number of characters. For example, a sender ID data element can be one to 30 characters in length.
