DUNS Number Definition
DUNS Number represents a unique number (nine-digit) identifying a business entity and is widely used in a role of global business identifier on a location specific basis. DUNS Number is assigned by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) (since 1963).
DUNS can be assigned to different types of organizations – non-profit, government, private companies and corporations etc. This number is directly connected to the company’s profile in Dun & Bradstreet database. We should mention that DUNS Number is listed only in Dun & Bradstreet database and cannot be viewed in databases of other organizations such as Corporate Experian and Equifax Small Business. Each agency of this type has its own database that is not shared with other entities.
Dun & Bradstreet is the largest global commercial database (with over 225 million records). However, not all companies are listed in their database. Prior to giving a company its DUNS identity a quality checking process should be conducted. Usually DUNS identification can be obtained during 30 days for free or during five business days by a paid service. After registration your company DUNS identification will be used to check the identity and legal entity status of your organization as part of business enrollment verification process.
Free information about your organization profile can be obtained through DUNS Lookup. While requesting DUNS number you can be asked to provide the following information:
- Legal entity name
- Headquarters address
- Mailing address
- Work contact information
Dun & Bradstreet can also contact your representative directly for specifying additional information if needed.
