EDI Date/Time Qualifiers Definition and Examples
In Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), qualifiers are codes used to specify the type or format of the data being transmitted. DTM (Date/Time) qualifiers, specifically, are used to indicate the context or meaning of date and time information within EDI transactions. These qualifiers play a crucial role in ensuring that the date and time data exchanged between trading partners are interpreted accurately and consistently.
Here are some common DTM qualifiers used in EDI transactions:
- DTM01 – Date/Time Qualifier: This qualifier specifies the type of date or time being conveyed. Examples include:
- 011: Requested Delivery Date
- 037: Effective Date
- 038: Expiration Date
- 090: Contract Effective Date
- 097: Ship Date
- 132: Last Payment Date
- DTM02 – Date/Time Period Format Qualifier: This qualifier indicates the format used to represent a date or time period. Examples include:
- DTM: Date
- RD: Range of Dates
- RT: Date and Time Range
- TS: Time Stamp
- TC: Time of Day
- DTM03 – Date/Time: This element contains the actual date or time information, following the format specified by the DTM02 qualifier.
- DTM04 – Time Code: This optional element is used to convey additional information about the time, such as time zone or daylight saving time.
By using DTM qualifiers, EDI systems can accurately interpret and process date and time information across various transactions and industries. These qualifiers ensure that trading partners understand the context and significance of the date and time data exchanged, thereby facilitating smooth and efficient business operations.
