EDI Implementation guidelines: requirements for different businesses
There can be a lot of information in implementation guidelines. The main components are EDI mapping specifications and business rules, EDI communications options (VAN, AS2, etc.), and sometimes label and packaging requirements.
The party creating the implementation guidelines refers to the EDI standards manual (e.g. ASC X12 manual) to pick out the best segments and elements required for their business process.
The following is an extract of mapping specifications for a retailer’s implementation guidelines. The 850 transaction set in the EDI X12 manual has many other segments and data elements that are not being used. In this case the retailer chose the fields required to fulfill the business process.
