What is a Segment Directory in the context of EDI?
A Segment Directory is a component that plays a crucial role in defining the structure and format of the data being exchanged between trading partners. A Segment Directory provides a comprehensive list of all the segments that can be used within a specific EDI message or document. In EDI, a segment is the smallest unit of data, representing a specific piece of information. Segments are grouped together to form a hierarchical structure that makes up an EDI message.
The Segment Directory typically includes information about each segment, such as:
- Segment Code or Name: A unique identifier for the segment, often represented by a three-letter code.
-
Description: A brief description of the purpose and content of the segment.
- Data Element Requirements: Information about the data elements that must be present within the segment and any requirements or conditions associated with them.
- Code Lists: If applicable, any code lists or values that are valid for specific data elements within the segment.
- Positional Information: The position of the segment within the overall structure of the EDI message.
Having a well-defined Segment Directory is essential for ensuring that both the sending and receiving parties understand the structure and content of the EDI messages. It helps in achieving consistency and interoperability between different trading partners and systems.
It’s worth noting that EDI standards, including segment definitions and directories, are often maintained and published by standards organizations such as ANSI (American National Standards Institute) or UN/CEFACT (United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business). These standards, like ASC X12 in North America or EDIFACT globally, provide a common framework for EDI implementation across industries and regions.
